Postdoc Researcher "Latin American popular culture and society"
Faculty/Services: Faculty of Humanities
Educational level: PhD
Function type: Academic Staff
Closing date: 5 september 2023
Vacancy number: 11940
The Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies (ARTES) currently has a vacant Postdoc researcher position at the Centre for Latin American Research and Documentation (CEDLA). ARTES is one of the five Research Schools within the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research.
What are you going to do?
Your research deals with contemporary Latin American popular culture in public and digital spaces, and its interactions with society, politics and history. You will generate new knowledge and approaches and will publish articles on how Latin American popular culture and (political) art travel through space and time, and how social and political events, collective initiatives and artists – film and theatre makers, cartoonists, painters, musicians, authors – influence one another.
Your research extends disciplinary boundaries, engaging with wider (global) debates and developments regarding identity-formation, memory-making, cultural heritage, social justice, decolonization, religion and/or migration. While insight in the ways in which digital platforms, social media and other new technologies increasingly connect local and national cultural expressions to wider (transnational) audiences and users is highly relevant, you are also aware that place-based social interactions remain very influential. Your study of Latin American popular culture lends itself to trans-local theorization, not limited to a specific country or community.
Your tasks and responsibilities:
· Conducting research and publishing a minimum of three peer-reviewed articles;
· Presenting research results at national and international workshops and conferences;
· Organizing various knowledge dissemination activities, including a workshop at CEDLA.
What do you have to offer?
You are passionate about doing innovative research on popular culture and society in Latin America, and transnational interactions. You are very knowledgeable of contemporary Latin American popular culture and its connections to current social and political developments and debates in the region as well of state-of-the-art theories in, for example, cultural studies, memory studies and heritage studies. You are eager to explore and develop new research methods. In addition, you have a social and cooperative attitude.
Your experience and profile:
· A PhD in the Humanities or Social Sciences on a topic relevant to the position (or currently waiting for the final defense while having full committee approval of PhD thesis);
· Outstanding research qualities, theoretical knowledge, creativity and productivity, manifested in a high-quality PhD dissertation and international peer-reviewed publications;
· Experience with qualitative research methods – e.g. those used in anthropology, ethnography, sociology, contemporary history or cultural studies;
· Excellent written and spoken English, a high level of proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese, and – if Dutch is not your mother tongue - willingness to learn Dutch;
· Intellectual curiosity and passion, and motivation to share your knowledge with both academic and non-academic audiences;
· Team spirit and experience working in an interdisciplinary setting;
· Proven organizational skills;
· Willingness to travel abroad for research, conferences and workshops.
What can we offer you?
The Postdoc researcher will be appointed at the department History, European Studies, Religious Studies and Latin American Studies (GER), more specifically at the CEDLA (Centre for Latin American Research and Documentation), of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam and will conduct the research at the Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies. The employment contract will be for one year. Contingent on a positive performance evaluation the contract will be extended with one year. The employment contract is for 30,4 hours a week. Preferred starting date is 01 November 2023.
The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and relevant experience, ranges between 歐元 4,036 to 歐元 5,929. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling', may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
What else do we offer
· Excellent possibilities for further professional development and education;
· An enthusiastic, inspiring and professional academic team;
· The opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers at research institutes that - partly as a result of their interdisciplinary approach - are world renowned.
