Research Fellow in Computational Physical Chemistry (109261-0524)

University of Warwick – Chemistry

Duration: Ending 31 December 2024

About the Role

For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Gabriele Sosso at g.sosso@warwick.ac.uk.

We are looking for a short-term Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the research group of Dr. Gabriele Sosso (https://sossogroup.uk and @SossoGroup) to finalise the computational aspects of the work relative to a BBSRC-funded project titled:

“Understanding Ice Formation in Plants: finding new routes to freezing tolerance”.

This is an ambitious, high-impact computational project that develops in a synergistic fashion with our experimental collaborators, Dr. Heather Knight and Dr. Tim Hawking (University of Durham). Details are available at https://sossogroup.uk/understanding-ice-formation-in-plants-postdoc-position-now-available/.

In short, the role involves analysing and rationalising the outcomes of classical molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the formation of ice through the plants cell wall. In particular, we seek to assess the impact of the extent of the cross-linking within the building blocks of the cell wall on the kinetics of ice growth. This is a unique opportunity to work at boundaries between physical chemistry and biology, in a research group with a very prominent profile in the ice community and guided by the outstanding support of our experimental collaborators. This post is specifically aimed at finalising the computational aspect of the project so as to produce a high-impact joint publication with our Durham collaborators.

About You

The ideal candidate would possess the following:

A PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry or any related discipline.

A strong background in molecular simulations.

Excellent Linux and coding skills (Fortran/C++/Python).

An ability to work collaboratively and effectively with academic and administrative colleagues, and with colleagues outside the University to promote collegiality.

If you have not yet been awarded your PhD but are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant on level 5 of the University grade structure (£32982). Upon successful award of your PhD and evidence of this fact, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of the level 6 of the University grade structure (£33966).
