INI Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Mathematical Sciences (Fixed Term)
The Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INI) invites applications for up to six 12-month INI Postdoctoral Fellowships in Mathematics.
This scheme has been established to enable early career researchers in the mathematical sciences to gain experience, independence and new connections, and hence create a foundation for a successful academic career.
These prestigious one-year fellowships will see the successful candidates spending 4-6 months participating in one of the following INI programmes:
· New equivariant methods in algebraic and differential geometry (January to June 2024)
· Anti-diffusive dynamics: from sub-cellular to astrophysical scales (January to June 2024)
· Stochastic systems for anomalous diffusion (July to December 2024)
· Equivariant homotopy theory in context (January to June 2025)
· Modern History of Mathematics (January to April 2025)
· Representing, calibrating and leveraging prediction uncertainty from statistics to machine learning (May to August 2025)
· Operators, graphs, groups (July to December 2025)
The remainder of the period will be spent within one of the University of Cambridge mathematics departments or within the mathematics department of another UK-based higher education institution.
The successful candidate must have a PhD in Mathematics or a related field upon taking up the Fellowship.
You must include in your application
· A full CV;
· A cover letter stating your proposed start and end dates, the INI programme that you intend participating in, the name, home institution and contact details of your intended supervisor for the period of the Fellowship not spent at INI;
· A description of your recent and proposed research (at most 3 pages);
· Statements of support from your proposed supervisor for the period not spent at INI and the Head of Department if that part of your Fellowship is to be spent outside Cambridge.
In addition to the statements of support identified above, the names and contact details of two academic referees are a necessary part of the submission. It would be helpful to allow contact with your referees prior to interview. Where possible, we suggest selecting the option 'at any time during the process'.
Duties include developing and conducting individual and collaborative research projects. The role holder will be expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required. You must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external contacts. You may be invited to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, provide instruction or plan/deliver seminars relating to the research area.
The Fellowships will be held within the period 1 March 2024 to 31 December 2025. There can be flexibility surrounding the start/end dates in order to accommodate the timing of the academic year and the timing of the relevant INI programme. In your cover letter please indicate, with explanation, your preferred dates.
Click the 'Apply' button below to register an account with our recruitment system (if you have not already) and apply online.
Conversations about flexible working are encouraged at the University of Cambridge. Please feel free to discuss flexibility prior to applying (using the contact information below) or at interview if your application is successful.
Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be directed to our Deputy Business and Operations Manager by email: deputybusinessandoperationsmanager@newton.ac.uk
Interview are expected to be held in week commencing 5 February 2024 (subject to confirmation).
