The School of Science, Engineering and Environment at the University of Salford is looking for a Post Doc Researcher in Software Engineering and Digital Information Management Systems for the development and application in construction and demolition waste management. This researcher will form part of the RECONMATIC Horizon Europe project and will test, validate and integrate innovative solutions and tools for Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) management applications. This will include the whole life cycle of built assets (buildings and infrastructure) to address the challenge for the construction industry and wider built environment in Europe to become a zero waste, natural resources responsible, and a low energy consuming sector.
Reporting directly to the Principal Investigator, and in collaboration with an interdisciplinary group of researchers, you will contribute by developing digital tools and providing support through the use of software engineering and AI for data management and decision making processes, and integration with BIM and other digital technologies. You will ensure the application of these digital tools to the demonstrators in RECONMATIC at the end of the project.
Key responsibilities:
To establish a methodology for the data requirements and use of automated material mapping datasets as part of the BIM processes in design, construction and operation for optimised life cycle material and waste management. This will involve the management of data and security, input and output structure for different scenarios and results, organising information at different stages of waste traceability, data interaction and results, etc.
To develop and demonstrate a circularity assessment tool for the project life cycle;
To integrate waste management relevant data which improve decision making and selection of best strategies for later end of life;
to support and integrate other applications in the Digital Information Management System (DIMS) for material flow analysis linked to the demonstrators developed in this project, such as waste prediction, materials data bank, site delivery logistics, waste generation monitoring and recovery, pre-demolition audits, etc.

A bit about RECONMATIC
The aim of RECONMATIC Horizon Europe project is to implement automated solutions for construction waste management that can contribute to substantially increase waste reduction and recovery. Six demonstrators are being developed around Europe, with automated solutions at different stages of the whole life cycle of a construction asset. The University of Salford is well involved in this multi-disciplinary project, with researchers from both Built Environment and Robotics departments, and with participation in NERIC (North of England Robotics Innovation Centre) and Energy House Research Centres.
