Postdoctoral Research Scholar, Earth BioGenome Project

Arizona State University

Job Description

The Earth BioGenome Project (EBP, https://earthbiogenome.org) at Arizona State University (ASU) is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to establish a collaborative program in biodiversity genomics and conduct research on genome evolution.

The position will be shared between the EBP at ASU (Dr. Harris Lewin) and the Biodiversity Knowledge Integration Center (BioKIC, Dr. Melissa Wilson, https://biokic.asu.edu). The postdoctoral scholar will build a program to sequence, annotate, and analyze the genomes of iconic and scientifically important eukaryotic species in Arizona, particularly those adapted to desert ecosystems. The successful candidate will also conduct research on chromosome evolution as part of a coordinated international effort to analyze chromosome-scale assemblies for more than 250 vertebrate species (see https://vertebrategenomesproject.org). This is an outstanding opportunity for a junior scientist to gain training in state-of-the-art genomic strategies to solve important fundamental research problems in genome evolution, adaptation to environmental stressors, speciation, and conservation.

This is a benefits-eligible, full-time, 12-month position. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the opportunity for renewal contingent on funding availability and satisfactory performance. The candidate will also need to be flexible enough to travel to conduct research nationally and internationally. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2024.

Essential Duties:

• Work with field biologists and organism collections to obtain specimens for DNA sequencing;

• Implement the entire EBP-recommended pipeline, from sample collection, taxonomic identification, vouchering, high molecular weight DNA isolation, library preparation, long-read sequencing, assembly, curation, annotation, and analysis methods;

• Analysis and interpretation of large genomic datasets, including statistical approaches for studying genome evolution and population genetics;

• Coordination of research with other centers and institutes around the world;

• Coordinate with the EBP Secretariat at ASU on standards development and implementation;

• Collaborate in coordination with members of interdisciplinary teams, including taxonomists, ecologists, laboratory automation specialists, and computer scientists;

• Prepare reports, academic/public presentations, and manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications;

• Administer research budgets and project planning;

• Assist with long-term data management and archiving; and

• Supervise student lab assistants.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

• Applicants must have a recent Ph.D. (within the past four years) in genetics, genomics, evolutionary biology, or a related discipline by the time of appointment.

• Demonstrated expertise in comparative genomics, evolutionary genetics, systematics, population genetics, and/or bioinformatics.

• Demonstrated academic interests and experience publishing in one or more of the following topics: comparative genomics, genome evolution, conservation genetics and genomics, population genetics, molecular systematics, landscape genomics, or other related fields.

Desired Qualifications

• Ability to aggregate and process large data sets.

• Proficient in the use of SQL, data visualizations, database software, and statistical programs. Knowledge of statistical analysis, database architecture, and data mining, tools and techniques.

• Uses and learns a wide variety of tools and languages to achieve results (e.g., R, SAS, SPSS, Python, Hadoop, RapidMiner, SQL, Javascript, etc.).

• Experience working with undergraduate students.

• The ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others on a multi-disciplinary research team.

• The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the university and community.

• Excellent organizational and communication (oral and written) skills (including spoken/written English).

Application Instructions:

Only electronic submissions will be reviewed. Incomplete applications will not be considered. To apply for this position, submit the following required application materials:

• Letter of interest outlining qualifications and experience as it relates to this position.
