We are looking for a Post-doctoral Researcher in isotope geochemistry and paleoclimate to join our project TONIC: Solving the Oligocene Icehouse Conundrum, a collaborative NERC Large grant with colleagues at UCL, Southampton, Bristol, and Exeter. TONIC’s aim is to understand the link between atmospheric CO2, global climate, and ice volume during the enigmatic Oligocene epoch, which spans 34-23 million years ago.
The post-doctoral Researcher will measure boron isotopes in foraminifera to reconstruct ocean pH and atmospheric CO2, filling a critical gap in records of Cenozoic CO2 and climate, and improving understanding of climate sensitivity and ice sheet vulnerability.
The successful applicant will have (or be near to completion of) a PhD in Earth Sciences or related field with expertise in geochemistry. Strong candidates will have technical expertise in clean lab geochemistry and isotope analysis by MC-ICPMS, and it will be desirable to have expertise in the geochemistry of Earth’s surface environment or paleoclimate. The postdoctoral researcher will join a dynamic cohort of researchers within the St Andrews School of Earth & Environmental Sciences.
The post is available until 30 June 2027, starting September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
