Postdoctoral Fellowship in Electrochemical Methods to Curb Carbon Emissions
Department of Chemistry, University of Manitoba
Application Deadline:
19 July 2024
The University of Manitoba invites applications for two postdoctoral fellowships in electrochemical methods aimed at reducing carbon emissions. These positions offer an exciting opportunity to work with academics and innovative industry professionals to contribute to cutting-edge research in the fields of electrocatalytic methane oxidation and alloy electroplating. Both projects are driven through industry partnerships with direct impact on real-life applications.
Scope of Research: The research activities will be related to two projects:
Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Methane to Methanol:
- Objective: Reduce methane emissions at remote drill sites and convert methane into methanol, a more energy-dense and easily transportable fuel.
- Focus: Understanding the electrocatalytic kinetics of the established catalyst for this reaction.
Alloy Electroplating:
- Objective: Develop a cyanide-free electroplating solution to replace the environmentally harmful cyanide baths currently used.
- Focus: Study electroplating kinetics in dependence on complexing agents in collaboration with an industry partner.
Duties:
- Conduct laboratory research on electrocatalytic methane oxidation and/or alloy electroplating.
- Analyze and interpret experimental results.
Prepare presentations and reports for internal and external communication of research results.
- Communicate research and exchange materials with external partners.
- Prepare manuscripts for publication.
- Participate in assigned conferences and symposia.
- Assist in supervision and mentoring of student group members.
Requirements:
- Ph.D. degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials engineering (or equivalent) awarded in 2021 or later.
- At least two years of research experience in electrochemical engineering and/or physical electrochemistry.
- Proven track record of research productivity, including peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, patents, reports, and other forms of research output.
- Strong communication skills in writing and speech to a variety of audiences.
- Proven ability to work on research projects both independently and in a team.
- Experience working with industry and/or larger collaborations is preferred.
- Experience supervising student research activities is preferred.
We are committed to creating an inclusive and diverse research environment. Minorities in STEM fields are especially encouraged to apply. Our team values the unique perspectives and backgrounds that contribute to innovative research and problem-solving. We welcome applicants who will bring diverse viewpoints and experiences to our research community.
