Postdoctoral Research Fellow

University of Exeter

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Job description

Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy

This full time UKRI-EPSRC funded post is available immediately on a fixed term contract until 31 March 2025.

The post

The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on an exciting multidisciplinary research project ‘User-bespoke AI-enhanced decision support to deliver UK woodland expansion for Net Zero'. The project, funded by UKRI-EPSRC to deliver co-designed decision support tools for tree planting and for policies to encourage tree planting, brings together world leading multi- disciplinary researchers focussed on AI and Net Zero challenges from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Biosciences and the Land, Environment and Economics Policy (LEEP) institute at the University of Exeter, as well as the departments of Mathematics and Business Management at University College London (UCL).

This post, based at Exeter, will focus on using data fusion to automate the rescaling of models of tree growth, and other models forced with climate variables that are required to inform policy makers. The successful applicant will work with environmental modellers, economists, and statisticians across the project to deliver methods for downscaling climate projections into the models that will inform decision makers. The successful applicant can expect to work across disciplines and can be either an AI researcher (statistics or machine learning) willing to embed methods in environmental and economic models, or a `Net Zero researcher' (e.g., in the environmental sciences, economics) with experience of fitting statistical models.

About you

The successful applicant can expect to work across disciplines and can be either an AI researcher (statistics or machine learning) willing to embed methods in environmental and economic models, or a `Net Zero researcher' (e.g., in the environmental sciences, economics) with experience of fitting statistical models. The post holder will use data fusion to rescale the climate and soil forcings available as 1km gridded products over the UK to custom grids over user-specified land areas.

Key skills will include experience coding in R and experience with fitting statistical models/machine learning. An ability to work with a large interdisciplinary team to meet project objectives, and an ability to communicate results through both peer-reviewed journal articles and presentations at conferences are also essential. A PhD in one of the critical project areas with a substantial quantitative component is essential. Examples include PhDs in Statistics, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Physics, Geography, Economics, Environmental Modelling, and Mathematics of Climate/Weather. Experience with environmental modelling, spatial statistical models, other programming languages such as Python, Matlab and C++ are all desirable.

Please ensure you read the Job Description and Person Specification for full details of this role.
