Postdoctoral researcher - kinetic Monte Carlo Simulation Development and Application
Tyndall National Institute
MN-17 Postdoctoral researcher - kinetic Monte Carlo Simulation Development and Application
Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term
Tyndall National Institute invites applications to a 12-month, full time research position in the Materials Modelling for Devices group to develop and apply kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to novel materials and their processing. The researcher will also work on transnational access projects as part of the ASCENT+ access program (www. ascent.network)
Purpose of Role
Reporting to the Head of Group – Materials Modelling for Devices in the Tyndall MicroNanoSystems Centre, the researcher will be responsible for developing an activity focussed on implementing kinetic Monte Carlo methods for modelling for materials processing and interfaces in materials stacks. The researcher will furthermore work on ASCENT+ transnational projects that involve significant modelling activities.
The role requires a strong background in the development and use of kinetic Monte Carlo Simulation methods, expertise in analysis of simulation outputs and a willingness to expand skillset into machine learning and first principles simulations. Collaboration with internal and external researchers will also be required.
As part of this role the candidate will apply to relevant funding programs to support their research strategy, e.g. Science Foundation Ireland-IRC Pathway program, and take training and development opportunities at Tyndall and UCC to drive their wider training and development.
Key Responsibilities
Leading research on development and implementation of atomistic kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations.
Use these kMC simulations to explore, inter alia, atomic level processing chemistry and tunnel junction stacks.
Work directly with research collaborators on ASCENT+ supported transnational projects that have a strong modelling activity.
Delivering high quality research outputs and publishing results in highest quality scientific and technical publications (targeting 1st quartile)
Applying to relevant funding calls to secure longer-term support for this research program.
Mentoring and supporting of PhD students and new postdoctoral researchers as needed.
Promoting Open Science within the group.
Clear commitment to personal and career development
Support education and public engagement activities
Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system and with the required Health and Safety standards.
Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of
Essential Criteria
A PhD degree in a relevant technical discipline – chemistry, physics, materials science
Typically with 1 year's post-PhD experience in delivering high quality research outputs
Background in kMC simulations, including development and use of this simulation method.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other researcher and research teams.
Track record in publishing high quality scientific publications
Commitment to personal training and development
Desirable Criteria
Evidence of entrepreneurial experience
Evidence of creative skills/creativity
Project/programme management training
Strong report writing skills
Excellent communication skills to interact with a range of researchers.
