OzGrav Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Swinburne University of Technology
Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing
Full time, 3-years fixed term position at our Hawthorn campus
Academic Level A salary + 17% superannuation and benefits
About the Role Swinburne's Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing are seeking a dynamic individual to join the team to undertake cutting edge research into the astrophysics of compact objects (neutron stars and black holes) and transient sources, under the guidance of Prof. Adam Deller. The research will be undertaken at Swinburne University of Technology in collaboration with OzGrav, the ARC Centre for Excellence in Gravitational Wave Discovery, and other national and international partners.
As the OzGrav Postdoctoral Research Fellow, you will use radio interferometric observations to undertake research and contribute to the scheduling, observation, data reduction, and analysis of radio interferometry data, with a particular focus on high angular resolution observations enabled by Very Long Baseline Interferometry facilities. Areas of scientific focus include radio pulsars used for tests of gravitational theories and to detect nanohertz gravitational waves, the electromagnetic counterparts to compact object mergers, and Fast Radio Bursts. You will be encouraged to pursue independent research aligned with understanding the astrophysics of these sources, and their use as tools to probe fundamental physics.
We are seeking a candidate who can work both independently and collaboratively with experts from partner institutes. If you are passionate about astrophysics and eager to contribute to groundbreaking research in the field, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity.
About You To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:
Experience with radio interferometers, including proficiency with radio astronomy data reduction software such as CASA, AIPS, difmap, or ParselTongue.
Knowledge of statistical techniques and modern scientific computing.
Ability to communicate scientific results effectively both verbally and via written communication (i.e., conference presentations and journal publications).
Experience with Very Long Baseline Interferometry is desirable.
Research experience in the field related to compact objects mergers such as accretion, gravitational waves, radio pulsars, etc. is preferred.
Qualifications
A PhD or equivalent in astrophysics, or a closely related field (e.g., physics, data science).
